The sports of Netball, is a popular sport in most Caribbean countries and is played from the primary school level right up to the national and international level. Netball entered the Commonwealth Games in 1998 and has remained a spectator “must see “during the Games.. As of January 2018, several teams in the region ranked among the top 20 in the world, including Jamaica (4th), Trinidad & Tobago (13th) Barbados (11th), Canada (18th), Grenada (15th), Saint Lucia (19th).
Netball is an integral part of the dynamic sporting culture of the Americas. It is the most popular female sport in the region, since its introduction to the region as ‘women’s basketball’ in North America in the early 1900,s.
This year Barbados will be hosting the Americas Federation of Netball Associations (AFNA) Qualifier – August 24-Sept 02- at the gymnasium which will see the top two teams advancing to the World Cup in Liverpool in 2019. Barbados hosted the first AFNA qualifier in 2006 with the Bajan Gems emerging second behind Trinidad and Tobago.
